THE UNIVERSITY of the Philippines’ Resilience Institute held a workshop on green strategies for disaster recovery that was attended by Albay Representative Joey Salceda and policy makers.

The workshop participants tackled the question “how can green growth strategies be incorporated to foster resilient post-disaster recovery?” The discussions centered on identifying solutions and challenges in integrating green growth in key areas of rehabilitation and reconstruction.

Green growth refers to a broad strategy for achieving inclusive, egalitarian, resource-efficient, and environmentally sustainable development.

UPRI Executive Director Dr. Mahar Lagmay stressed the need to shift from the predominantly brown economy to the green economy, which he said is resilient, stable, and includes the ecosystem’s integrity.

Meanwhile, Salceda urged participating policymakers and stakeholders to “become champions of climate change as a lifelong commitment.”

He said that climate change and social and economic inequities are an assault on human dignity.
