THESE YOUTH-LED ORGANIZATIONS ARE MAKING SURE THE NEXT GENERATION HAS A SAY IN THE WORLD THEY’LL INHERIT
"The future is young," as they say. If you find yourself desperate to make a change in light of everything happening in our country and world, but feeling helpless as a young student disregarded by older generations, look no further than these initiatives that prove the youth is a force to be reckoned with.
There’s something incredibly frustrating about being a teen or young adult in this messed up world. With almost all of our world’s biggest problems—global warming, wars, racism, sexism, rape culture, poverty, and the dirty tricks of politics—mere products of atrocities and problematic views of generations that came before us, it feels exasperating to know that these are also problems we’ll inherit one day as a generation, if they haven’t hit us already. But, how do you solve issues that stem all the way back to our grandparents’ time?
Perhaps the only thing to do is to tackle them head-on, with a fierce commitment to rally all of the youth towards a united goal: a better world for us all. May that be through better access to education, eradicating obsolete ideologies and practices, taking much better care of the world we live in, or all of the above, among many other pressing issues.
In light of this, there have been several youth-led organizations that were established to do just that. These initiatives do the important work of packaging important information into eye-catching and easy-to-digest infographics and social media posts, gathering donations and projects for devastated areas and other organizations that need help, and putting the spotlight on just-as-important matters that mainstream media fail to broadcast.
Although a lot of these initiatives have been operating since before lockdown, their popularity amid quarantine has definitely gone off the charts. This could be attributed to all the national issues that have happened throughout 2020 that need no further explanation. We’ve all felt helpless during those times—even until now—and these initiatives are proof of what the young generation can achieve when working together.
If you’re looking for organizations to support or join that are organized by young people like you, or feeling the urge to start your own small initiative and looking for inspiration, check out these groups:
