UP KEEPS FINAL FOUR BID ALIVE, GIVES FEU ITS EIGHT STRAIGHT LOSS

The University of the Philippines (UP) is still in the running for a final four spot after sweeping the Far Eastern University (FEU), 25-10, 25-19, 25-7, on Thursday in the UAAP Season 84 women’s volleyball at Mall of Asia Arena.

With the win, the Fighting Maroons put an end to the team’s two-game losing skid, and climbed to a 5-6 slate, while the Lady Tamaraws absorbed their eighth straight defeat and sunk at a 1-10 record.

UP easily conquered the first set with a remarkable 15-point gap after a block far off the net from Jaila Atienza, but FEU fought back in the second frame to make things hard for the Katipunan side.

FEU finally got hold of the lead with 14-13 in the second set and continued for a neck-to-neck battle to extend at 18-17 lead, but UP had other plans as the team never looked back and ended the set with service from Ethan Arce.

UP demonstrated in the third and final set that the team gets what they want by asserting control and fast ending FEU’s agony as the latter handed up the victory due to the team’s attack error.

Alyssa Bertolano paced UP with 14 points from 10 kills and four aces, while Arce scored 13 markers from six kills, five aces, and four blocks, and Mariane Sotomil guided the team with 18 excellent sets and had four points.

Chenie Tagaod and Jean Asis led the Lady Tamaraws with six points each.

UP has to win their remaining three games to advance to the semi-finals, and their first stop will be against the unbeaten National University Lady Bulldogs on Saturday, June 4.
