UP HANDS UST’S FIRST LOSS; CLAIMS SOLO LEAD
The University of the Philippines (UP) stayed undefeated after handing to University of Sto Tomas (UST) its first loss in a four-set win, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22, in the UAAP Season 84 women's volleyball tournament on Tuesday at Mall of Asia Arena.
The Fighting Maroons and the Growling Tigresses tied the set score, 1-1, but it was the former who took control despite Eya Laure’s 28-point performance coming from 25 attacks, two service aces, and one block
The Diliman side got a comfortable advantage in the fourth and last frame with a 20-14 lead; but the España side brought a scare to UP as Laure rallied to cut the gap score, and follow-through from Nina Ytang UST’s blockers before Jum Gayo of UP answered back from the service line, which gave a 23-19 advantage to UP.
Laure kept growling as she delivered back-to-back hits but Alyssa Bertolano won’t have it as she delivered UP to match point and subsequently blocked Laure thanks to the tandem of Lorie Bernardo and Bertolano which gave the Fighting Maroons the victory.
Jewel Encarnacion had 16 points, one block, 14 excellent receptions, and 11 excellent digs, Bertolano had 15 markers, three blocks, and two aces to go with 11 excellent digs, as Bernardo, Ytang, and Jaila Atienza had nine points apiece.
