LETRAN ROUTS MAPUA FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN
Colegio de San Juan de Letran extended its winning run to four games with an 80-60 victory over Mapua University in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament on Friday at the La Salle Greenhills Gym.
The Knights maintained their lead in the team standings, along with San Beda University, with their victory, while the Cardinals suffered their first loss and fell to 3-1.
Jeo Ambohot delivered with a double-double performance of 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Rhenz Abando contributed a solid output of 14 markers and nine boards, two assists, and a steal.
Letran hit an early stumbling block when big man Louie Sangalang was called for a disqualifying foul for throwing the ball in the face of Cardinals counterpart Louie Bonifacio.
Despite the early ejection of Sangalang, the Knights did not lose their momentum as they ended the halftime with a double-digit advantage.
Letran extended their lead in the game to 27 points, 73-46, in the final frame. While Mapua tried to rally back and went on a 9-0 run to cut the gap to 17, 74-57, with more than two minutes remaining on the clock.
Despite the deficit being cut, the Cardinals failed to bounce back from the huge lead in the last ticks of the payoff period and handed the victory to the Knights.
Toby Agustin led the Cardinals with 14 points and four rebounds, while Warren Bonifacio was limited to six points on 2-of-9 field goal shooting, on top of three boards.
