SHAQ DELOS SANTOS APPOINTED AS HEAD COACH OF CIGNAL AHEAD OF PVL LAUNCH
Decorated head coach Shaq Delos Santos has been officially appointed as head coach of Cignal in their pro debut in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) which is set to kick off on May 8 under a bubble format at the Inspire Sports Academy.
The HD Spikers made the announcement of the four-time PSL champion coach on their social media accounts on Friday.
Delos Santos had been the head coach of Petron from 2016-2019 that steered the Blaze Spikers to four PSL championship trophies—two championships each in Grand Prix and All Filipino conference out of five Finals appearances from 2017 to 2019.
He was also part of the squad as deputy of the former Blaze Spikers coach George Pascua who guided Petron in taking over the 2014 Grand Prix and 2015 All-Filipino in 2016.
Before the 2020 PSL Season began, Delos Santos was hired by the Cignal HD Spikers as a lead assistant of coach Edgar Barroga, but the season was cut off due to the escalating cases of the Covid-19 virus.
In 2019, Delos Santos maneuvered the HD Spikers to upset the Blaze spikers in the 2019 All-Filipino Conference semifinals and clinched the silver medal in the tournament after falling short to the F2 Logistics in the finals.
Delos Santos also became the head coach of the women’s national team in the 2018 Asian Games and 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
Since Barroga was not renewed by the team back in June of 2020, the former Philippine women’s head coach is taking over Cignal’s coaching post.
Delos Santos will now lead a squad bannered by HD Spiker’s stalwarts Rachel Anne Daquis, Alohi Robins-Hardy, and libero Jheck Dionela.
Cignal will take part in the PVL’s historic professional debut alongside PSL squads PLDT, Sta. Lucia, Chery Tiggo, and F2 Logistics, also with PVL mainstays Creamline, Petro Gazz, Choco Mucho, Perlas Spikers, Army, BaliPure, and Unlimited Athletes Club, which is coached by Barroga.
