SENATOR SEEKS TO STRENGTHEN PUP AS NATIONAL POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY
SENATOR Bam Aquino has filed a measure seeking to strengthen the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) as the National Polytechnic University to expand its role in providing accessible, quality, and industry-responsive higher education.
Senate Bill No. 2468 seeks to repeal Presidential Decree No. 1341, which established PUP’s existing legal framework.
In his explanatory note, Aquino said PUP has long played an important role in providing accessible and quality higher education, particularly in technology, engineering, applied sciences, business, and other disciplines essential to national development.
“Through its network of campuses across the country, PUP serves a large and diverse student population and has contributed to the development of the country’s workforce,” Aquino said.
The proposed measure seeks to recognize and reinforce PUP’s role in technical and vocational higher education, applied research, innovation, and the development of a highly skilled workforce.
It would also enable the university to expand and strengthen academic programs and initiatives responsive to emerging technologies and the evolving needs of a rapidly changing economy.
Aquino said strengthening PUP’s mandate and institutional capacity would enhance its ability to provide relevant and responsive education, advance research and innovation, and equip students with the knowledge and skills needed by industries in an increasingly technology-driven and globally competitive environment.
