PH SPORTS OFFICIALS TO ANTICIPATE BUBBLE SET UP FOR TOKYO OLYMPICS

With the Tokyo Olympics set to see action in July of 2021, PH sports officials are pushing for athletes assembled to participate in the Tokyo Olympics next year for a training program under a bubble set-up.

According to the Chef de mission Mariano Araneta, they are already making a move for a planned bubble to work where they are already seeking clearance from the IATF for jumpstart preparations.

The idea of having a training bubble for the Filipino athletes was just an idea a month ago where Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham “Bambol’’ Tolentino said that he is not closing his doors to the idea of sending the country’s Olympic qualifiers to Tokyo for them to adjust to the conditions way ahead of the Olympics.

Nonetheless, it looks like either way, athletes will be on a bubble set up sooner or later.

“We are pushing them to already allow the Olympians to train in a bubble,” Araneta propounded, who has been closely coordinating with POC and Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) officials for the country’s preparation in the Tokyo 2020.

According to the report of Spin.ph, training sites for the bubble venue is being discussed where the Inspire Academy in Calamba is one of the choices.

Moreover, under the planned bubble training the Olympiads will also be housed in the same place.

Looking back, Inspire Academy is no stranger to co-athletes as this venue has been the temporary home of the Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3×3 league during its shortened competition earlier this month.

Gilas was also able to make use of the world-class facility owned by National University in gearing up for the upcoming Fiba Asia Cup qualifying window in Bahrain this week.

As of now, there are only four Filipino qualifiers bound for Tokyo Olympics—pole vaulter EJ Obiena, gymnast Carlos Yulo and boxers Eumir Marcial and Irish Magno. Where the world champion Yulo is already based in Japan.

All in all, a total of 82 athletes from 19 sports are still chasing for the Olympic spots, with 65 of them in the country waiting for the go signal of commencement of training.

The postponed Tokyo 2020 will set to happen from July 23 to August 8, 2021.
