EJ OBIENA BAGS GOLD, RECORDS SEASON-BEST JUMP IN BERLIN POLE VAULT TILT
Tokyo Olympic-bound Ej Obiena set a new personal record of 5.80 meters as he topped the Internationales Stadionfest (ISTAF) Indoor Athletics Meet in Berlin, Germany.
Obiena once again shattered the national record for the indoor pole vault.
He had previously broken the national record during the World Athletics Indoor Tour Leg in Karlsruhe, Germany where he recorded 5.62 meters and finished fifth.
The 25-year old clinched the gold medal after having only one attempt on clearing the 5.80 meters and marked his first medal finish this 2021.
He hurdled pass through home bet German Torben Blech who also made the 5.80 meters mark, however, succeeded with two attempts resulting in a silver medal finish.
Oleg Zernikel, who came from Germany as well, settled with bronze with a 5.72-meter clearance.
Obiena is the first Filipino to qualify in the postponed Tokyo Olympics which is set for July this year.
He will be competing in the quadrennial multi-sport event along with fellow Filipinos Gymnast Carlos Yulo and Boxers Irish Magno and Eumir Marcial.
