ALEX Eala etched her name into Philippine sports history after rallying past world No. 3 Jessica Pegula, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, to win the 2026 Mubadala DC Open on Monday (Philippine time), becoming the first Filipino to capture a WTA Tour singles championship.

The 21-year-old left-hander overcame an opening-set loss before dominating the remainder of the championship match, which was interrupted by heavy rain on Sunday in Washington, D.C. Play resumed the following day with Eala holding a 2-1 advantage in the second set. The Filipina never looked back, storming to victory in one of the biggest moments in Philippine tennis history.

The triumph marked Eala’s maiden WTA Tour-level singles title and capped a remarkable breakthrough season that has seen her emerge as one of the sport’s fastest-rising stars.

The victory also propelled Eala to a career-high world ranking of No. 20, marking another significant milestone in her rapidly ascending career.

Eala’s championship run featured victories over some of the biggest names in women’s tennis. She defeated world No. 8 Elina Svitolina earlier in the tournament before dispatching four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, 6-4, 6-2, in the semifinals to book a title showdown against Pegula.

Facing the tournament’s top seed and world No. 3, Eala displayed remarkable poise after dropping the opening set. She seized momentum in the second set before completely overwhelming Pegula in the decider, blanking the American 6-0 to complete the stunning comeback.

Pegula entered the final seeking to add another Washington title to her résumé, having previously won the tournament in 2019 and 2021. Instead, she became the latest top-ranked player to fall to the surging Filipina, who recorded her fifth victory over a Top 10 opponent during her breakout 2026 campaign.

An emotional Eala reflected on the historic achievement moments after lifting the trophy.

“I feel so much love… My first chance at a title, knowing it won’t be my last,” she said after the match.

The DC Open crown represents the biggest title of Eala’s young career. Further, it strengthens her status as one of the brightest talents in international tennis, while providing the Philippines with its first-ever WTA Tour singles champion.
