COLLEGE of Saint Benilde wrested the solo lead with a clinical 25-23, 25-21, 25-22 win over the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta in the National Collegiate Athletic Association women’s volleyball tournament Tuesday at the San Andres Sports Complex.

Setter Cloanne Mondoñedo lived up to her billing as she led CSB’s charge when it mattered most, spiked with a gem of a kill that shattered the match’s last deadlock at 22-22 before hammered in the game-winning spike.

The victory allowed the Lady Blazers to keep their perfect run to four, and 15th overall dating back from last season.

Not to be outdone, Gayle Pascual led CSB with 22 points, including two blocks even as rookie Jessa Dorog delivered three important service aces to finish with nine points to go along with nine digs and nine receptions.

On the other hand, Michelle Gamit put in nine points while Mondoñedo tossed in 22 excellent sets.

Hours before CSB’s historic win, rookie Judiel Nitura slammed 16 kills while Lea Tapang had three service aces to finish with 11 points to go along with 15 digs and 13 receptions more than enough for Letran to get back into the groove, winning 19-25, 25-22, 25-12, 25-12 at Emilio Aguinaldo College’s expense.

Fielded in the second set, Jade Isar had two blocks for an 11-point effort, while Cha Cuñada and Angelique Ledesma came away with nine points apiece for the Lady Knights.

Toting a 2-1 win-loss record, Letran found itself tied with Arellano University and Mapua in the fourth spot.

The loss ended the Lady Altas’ three-match winning streak as the Las Piñas-based spikers fell to third place.

Mary Rhose Dapol had three service aces for a 20-point outing to go along with seven receptions, while Shai Omipon chipped in 11 points and seven receptions for Perpetual.

The Generals moved up to 2-1 in men’s action following a 25-23, 25-22, 27-25 tripping of the Knights.

Ralph Pitogo had 19 points while Joshua Ramilo contributed 17 points and 16 receptions for EAC.

Unlike their men’s team, the Lady Generals, who were led by Jennifer Omapas’ 14 points, continue to struggle with their third consecutive defeat.

EAC is now level with San Sebastian, Jose Rizal University, and San Beda at the bottom of the women’s standings.
