BOXING COMMUNITY MOURNS DEATH OF STUDENT-ATHLETE IN CAMIGUIN

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The boxing world is in shock after the tragic death of 20-year-old Marc Mateo Castillo, a student-athlete who collapsed shortly after his match at the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) National Games in Mambajao, Camiguin, on April 26, 2025.

Castillo, representing the Southern Tagalog Region, was competing against an opponent from the National Capital Region when his match was stopped in the third round. Despite immediate medical attention at the venue, Castillo was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after.

Occidental Mindoro State College, Castillo’s school, confirmed its collaboration with relevant agencies to arrange for his remains to be transported home. In a statement, the college extended condolences to Castillo’s family and assured full support in all arrangements.

“The college administration has reached out to the family to provide assistance and ensure a dignified return of Marc’s remains,” the statement said.

The local government of Mambajao also expressed their condolences. Their Municipal Health Office confirmed that medical personnel were present at the event and quickly provided initial care. Dr. Boel Espinas referred Castillo to Camiguin General Hospital for further treatment after the incident.

As of now, the cause of Castillo’s death is still under investigation by medical authorities. His passing has left the sports community devastated.
