ALEX EALA CONTINUES CAMPAIGN IN JA TROFEO BONFIGLIO, MOVES TO JUNIORS SEMIFINALS
Filipina tennis ace Alex Eala continued her rampage as she overcame Belgium’s Sofia Costoulas in a thrilling three-hour match on Friday night, Philippine time, 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-4.
The Filipino tennis prodigy’s victory against Costoulas qualified her to the semifinals of the tourney.
Eala and Costoulas had an intense match from the very beginning, with a 12th-game deuce, which the 16-year-old Filipina dominated.
Belgian Costoulas, 16, however, racked up in the following set and outclassed Eala in two consecutive rounds to force a decider.
Down by two games in the third, Eala kept her composure and held on to tie the game at 4-4, before she eventually took over the match.
Despite her win, the Juniors World No. 3 recorded 14 double faults.
The 16-year-old scholar of the world-famous Rafael Nadal Academy will face either Russian Mirra Andreeva or Belgium’s Tilwith Di Girolami in the semifinal’s knockout.
Eala is still in running in doubles semis as she and Madison Sieg of the United States teamed up against Russian pair of Kira Pavlova and Diana Shnaider for a chance at the title game, Friday night.
