SPARK TO DUTERTE: INTERNET SHOULD BE CONSIDERED BASIC HUMAN RIGHT

/ 24 September 2020

THE SAMAHAN ng Progresibong Kabataan appealed to the government to consider internet access as a basic human right, especially for students who will soon begin having online lessons.

The group said that even students who will have a modular mode of learning need internet access because they will have to do some research.

It also pointed out that videoconferencing is costly, thus students should have access to free wifi.

“It only stands to reason, then, that access to the Internet must also be considered a right in the same way that education is,” SPARK said on Facebook.

The group warned that lack of access to the internet may prompt students to drop out.

It reiterated its call to the government to provide full support to students especially during the pandemic. It also pressed its call for an academic freeze.
