SOLON URGES STRONGER SCHOOL PROTECTION AFTER ADZU SHOOTING

/ 20 August 2026

HOUSE Committee on Basic Education chairman and Pasig City Rep. Roman Romulo expressed deep sorrow and concern over the tragic shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU), calling for stronger measures to protect students and address the root causes of youth violence.

Romulo said his thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, classmates, teachers, and the entire school community as they cope with the aftermath of the violence.

“Schools must remain places of learning, safety, and hope—never sites of fear and bloodshed,” Romulo said.

He said the incident underscores the urgent need to strengthen security measures for learners while addressing factors that may contribute to youth violence, including mental health concerns, bullying, access to weapons, and other risks faced by children and communities.

Romulo also called on the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to conduct a swift, impartial, and thorough investigation into the incident.

He said those responsible must be held accountable in accordance with the law, while immediate psychosocial support and other necessary assistance should be extended to the victims, their families, and the affected school community.

The lawmaker likewise appealed to the public to refrain from sharing unverified information while the investigation is ongoing.

Romulo said the tragedy should serve as a solemn reminder that protecting children requires coordinated action among families, schools, communities, and government institutions.

He reiterated his commitment to supporting policies and interventions that promote safe and nurturing learning environments, early intervention, peaceful conflict resolution, and the dignity, welfare, and best interests of every Filipino child.
