SOLON OPPOSES MANDATORY MILITARY SERVICE PROPOSAL

/ 22 January 2022

GABRIELA Partylist Rep. Arlene Brosas on Friday opposed the proposal of vice presidential candidate Sara Duterte-Carpio to make military service mandatory for those who reach the age of 18.

She cited the high cases of rape and sexual violence perpetrated by the police and military.

Brosas condemned the alleged illegal detention, interrogation, torture, and rape of a 15-year-old girl by soldiers under the 59th IB and CAFGU in Quezon Province.

The victim claimed that she was abducted by members of the 59th IBPA in July 2020 and was raped by a member of CAFGU multiple times.

The victim said that the soldiers wanted to get information from her about her knowledge on the rebel activities in her community.

“Amid high cases of rape and sexual violence perpetrated by the police and military, it’s infuriating how a vice presidential aspirant like Sara Duterte can propose such measure. What kind of public leader would instill such false nationalism to the Filipino youth?” Brosas said.

“Under President Duterte’s regime, military officials were given a free pass to rape and abuse women. Following his daughter’s recent pro-military stance, let’s expect that this kind of rotten system that preys on poor and vulnerable women will continue if she wins this election,” she added.
