SOLON BATS FOR FREE EDUCATION FOR SENIOR CITIZEN

/ 28 August 2022

MAKATI City 2nd District Rep. Luis Jose Angel Campos Jr. filed a measure seeking to provide free education for senior citizens in all public schools.

In filing House Bill 1290 or the proposed Free Education for Seniors Act, Campos explained some senior citizens failed to complete their education – or in other cases could not even start it – even if they want it for financial reasons.

He further said it is the State’s duty to provide its citizens access to quality education regardless of age.

The measure exempts senior citizens from paying tuition fees in any public school or university.

Based on the bill, senior citizen availing of the exemption are still required to comply with minimum admission requirements of the school or university but no additional academic requirements.

“Advance age should not be a reason to deny a person his or her basic right to quality education,” Campos stressed in his explanatory note.
