/ 8 April 2024

SENATOR Francis Tolentino urged cadets of Class 2027 of the Philippine Merchant Marines Academy or PMMA to be part of the legacy of excellence of the academy.

During the donning ceremony of PMMA Class 2027 in Zambales, Tolentino stressed the importance of protecting the country’s maritime domain amidst challenges in Bajo de Masinloc.

“This donning ceremony is the start of a journey towards becoming merchant marine officers. Remember cadets you are not alone, you are part of a proud legacy that stretches back over two centuries, 204 na itong PMMA, with their legacy of excellence, their legacy of professionalism, and unwavering dedication to duty,” Tolentino said.

As part of the ceremony, the academy also commemorates PMMA’s 204th anniversary as the first maritime school in Asia.

“Continue that legacy and I assure you that our country will not forget what your parents have done for you and we will not also forget what the PMMA has done for you,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tolentino opposed that the Quad Naval Drills in the West Philippine Sea may provoke China.

“To the contrary, this would ensure stability in the region, China is not being provoked but being made to realize that peace and stability in the region are likewise to serve their interests,” he said.
