SENATOR TO CTU STUDENTS: TURN CHALLENGES INTO OPPORTUNITIES, LEAD NATION-BUILDING EFFORTS
AMID mounting global and domestic challenges, Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano urged students to treat adversity as a springboard for growth, emphasizing that difficult times often forge stronger, more resilient generations.
Speaking at a Miting de Avance and dialogue organized by the student government of Cebu Technological University(CTU), Cayetano said today’s youth are navigating an unusual convergence of crises—from the lingering effects of the pandemic to persistent corruption and rising geopolitical tensions.
Despite these pressures, he stressed that such experiences can prepare young people for greater responsibilities in the future.
“Usually, the generations that go through crises are the stronger generations,” Cayetano said.
He pointed out that history consistently shows how individuals shaped by hardship often emerge as leaders, drawing parallels to figures who endured trials before fulfilling their purpose.
Cayetano also underscored the importance of perspective in a rapidly evolving world, particularly with the rise of artificial intelligence. While some view AI as a threat to jobs, he noted that others see it as a powerful tool for innovation and progress.
“Both of them are looking at the same thing. One of them saw opportunity. The other one saw defeat,” he said, referring to contrasting attitudes toward emerging technologies and global developments.
Rather than giving in to fear, Cayetano encouraged students to recognize opportunities amid change and position themselves to benefit from them.
He also highlighted the importance of civic engagement, urging students to take an active role in leadership and decision-making—especially through voting.
“Students, please vote. Pick the leaders that you want and that can lead you into the next chapter,” he said.
Cayetano further called on the youth to move beyond political divisions after elections and work together toward shared goals, emphasizing unity as key to addressing the country’s challenges.
