THE PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP) is backing the Department of the Interior and Local Government’s (DILG) call for families, schools, communities and government agencies to work together to protect children and prevent violence in and around schools.

Following three school shooting incidents reported since June—in Tacloban City, Zamboanga City and, most recently, South Cotabato on September 18—the PNP said sustained preventive efforts are needed beyond strengthening school security.

Under the leadership of Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., chief of the PNP, the police organization is joining the DILG in urging parents and guardians to stay closely involved in their children’s lives, including monitoring their online activities, the content they access and warning signs that may require guidance or professional support.

The PNP also stressed the importance of responsible firearm ownership and secure storage, particularly to prevent minors from gaining access to firearms.

At the same time, the PNP said concerns involving children should be addressed with care, appropriate intervention, and respect for their rights and welfare.

“We need to be present not only when there is already a problem, but much earlier—when a child needs guidance, when a family sees a warning sign, or when a firearm is not properly secured. Dito kailangan ang pakikipagtulungan ng lahat. Hindi ito kayang solusyunan ng isang ahensya lamang,” Nartatez said.

The PNP said it will continue coordinating with the DILG, Department of Education, local government units, schools, families and other concerned agencies to strengthen preventive measures and help maintain safe learning environments.

The efforts are consistent with the PNP Focused Agenda, particularly the Enhanced Managing Police Operations (EMPO), which promotes coordinated and responsive action in addressing emerging threats to public safety.

The PNP also remains committed to supporting President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s direction to strengthen school security and protect students, while advancing its “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat at Nararamdaman” through responsive police service and stronger community partnerships.
