PASIG City Rep. Roman Romulo said that the House of Representatives will discuss the proposal to bring back the old school calendar when session resumes in July.

The chairman of the Committee on Basic Education and Culture said the committee will get the views of the Department of Education and teachers.

“Second, and equally important, what happens to the vacation leave of the teachers if we immediately return to the old academic calendar? What about the health and mental wellness of teachers and students?” Romulo said in a viber message to The POST.

He added that the important consideration should be what academic calendar causes the least learning disruption.

“The Philippines only has 2 seasons – both with their own challenges and DepEd and CHED should be ready for both,” the lawmaker said.

While there is no need to enact a separate law to return to the old school calendar, Romulo said the committee meeting will allow more people to discuss the pros and cons of the proposal.

He said that the discussions will provide a venue to push the DepEd and DPWH to coordinate better in the design of school buildings.

“Whether the existing or the old academic calendar, there will be challenges that design may play an important role,” Romulo said.
