LAWMAKER FILES MEASURE TO DEVELOP GLOBALLY COMPETITIVE SCIENCE AND MATH TEACHERS

/ 8 August 2022

PAMPANGA 2nd District Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo filed a measure that aims to develop globally competitive Science and Mathematics teachers.

In her House Bill 487 or the proposed Developing Globally Competitive Science and Mathematics Teachers Act of 2022, Arroyo stressed the importance of having exceptionally and highly educated students.

However, she said that it is impossible to create such students without teachers.

She added that it is important to create and maintain an adequate pool of highly qualified, motivated and globally competitive teachers, particularly those in the area of science and mathematics.

Under the measure, certified teachers will be provided with scholarships and specialized training aside from a higher starting pay.

Under the bill, the Professional Regulatory Commission shall allow new graduates to teach between graduation time and taking of the Licensure Examination for Teachers and giving rewards to top scorers in the LET.

The measure mandates the promotion of non-science and non-mathematics majors who have completed a certification program in science content. It also seeks to create a science and mathematics Teachers Development Fund to finance programs for the continuing improvement of teachers’ skills.
