LAWMAKER EYES MORE SCHOLARSHIP FOR FARMERS’ CHILDREN

/ 26 July 2022

P3PWD Party-list Representative Rowena Guanzon sought more scholarship grants for children of farmers.

The lawmaker said that farmers need support because of the rising cost of farming needs such as fertilizer.

She said that a bag of fertilizer costs more than a 50 kilogram of rice.

“Fertilizer is more expensive than rice – P3,900 per bag while rice, good quality, is 3K per 50 kg bag. Aside from subsidy on fertilizer, small rice farmers’ children need [scholarship] grants,” Guanzon said on Twitter.

The Department of Agriculture has a scholarship program for children and relatives of farmers to study agriculture in college.

Dubbed the Educational Assistance for the Youth Agri Program, it aims to encourage deserving children of small-scale farmers and fishers to pursue studies and professional careers related to agriculture, fisheries, agricultural engineering and other related fields.
