KOMIKS AS INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS IN SCHOOLS? WHY NOT, SAYS LAWMAKER

/ 1 December 2020

PARAÑAQUE City 2nd District Rep. Joy Myra Tambunting pushed for a measure allowing the use of Philippine komiks as instructional materials in schools.

House Bill 7980 or the proposed Galing Pinoy Komiks Support Act will mandate the Department of Education to make part of learning materials in komiks form.

“Pinoy komiks being an essential part of the Philippine arts and culture must be recognized as such and be provided with enough support to enable it to flourish further,” Tambunting said.

The lawmaker added that the government must take a proactive role in supporting local comic artists and take measures to popularize Pinoy komiks.

Under the bill, 10 percent of all instructional materials printed and utilized in all academic institutions, both public and private, by the Department of Education shall be in komiks form.

All departments, agencies and instrumentalities are also obliged to incorporate pinoy komiks into their formation and policy advocacy campaigns, and other publicity materials.
