DEPED, SOLONS PUSH STRONGER SCOUTING PROGRAMS IN SCHOOLS

/ 27 October 2026

THE DEPARTMENT of Education (DepEd) and lawmakers are exploring measures to strengthen scouting programs in basic education institutions nationwide, including improved funding, clearer implementation guidelines, and stronger oversight of scouting organizations.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara met with members of the Philippine Legislators Union for Scouting (PLUS) on Monday to discuss proposed initiatives to expand and strengthen scouting activities in schools.

Among the key proposals was the development of a DepEd order to reinforce the implementation of scouting programs in basic education institutions, alongside the formulation of a legislative agenda in coordination with PLUS.

The discussions also covered the provision of adequate funding for scouting activities and a review of existing guidelines governing the use of the Special Education Fund (SEF).

The officials likewise explored measures to strengthen the oversight and accountability of local scout executive boards and councils to ensure the proper implementation of scouting programs.

Scouting activities are intended to complement formal education by providing learners with opportunities to develop leadership, discipline, teamwork, civic responsibility, and practical life skills.

Among those who attended the meeting were Agusan del Norte Lone District Representative Dale Corvera, Zambales Second District Representative Doris Maniquiz, Southern Leyte First District Representative Roger Mercado, and Bukidnon Fourth District Representative Laarni Roque.

The discussions form part of efforts to strengthen collaboration between DepEd and lawmakers in supporting scouting programs and expanding opportunities for learners to develop leadership skills and responsible citizenship.
