DEPED PUSHES UPDATED SAFETY RULES, CALLS FOR STRONGER POLICE PRESENCE IN SCHOOLS

24 June 2026

THE DEPARTMENT of Education (DepEd) is moving to strengthen school safety measures, including updated security protocols and increased police visibility, following a series of violent incidents in public schools.

During a visit to San Jose National High School in Tacloban City, Leyte, on Tuesday, Education Secretary Sonny Angara raised concern over recent cases of violence involving learners in Tacloban City, General Trias City, and Cavite City, all involving children in conflict with the law (CICL).

Angara stressed that the issue goes beyond peace and order, noting the growing exposure of young people to violent content online.

He also raised concern about possible “copycat” incidents inspired by violence abroad, particularly in the United States.

The education chief said DepEd is reviewing and updating school safety protocols, including procedures for extreme scenarios such as active shooter situations.

“These are protocols we never really thought we would need, but given recent developments, we have to update them,” Angara said.

He added that a stronger police presence in schools is being considered as a preventive measure, citing support from the Philippine National Police leadership and feedback from educators.

Angara also urged teachers and school heads to take a more active role in monitoring student behavior, emphasizing their role as “second parents” to learners.

DepEd reported that three individuals died in the San Jose National High School shooting, while 20 others were injured.

Separately, a Grade 11 student was stabbed in Cavite City on June 19, while another attack in General Trias City on June 16 left seven students injured.

Meanwhile, the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) called on education agencies to strengthen character formation alongside academic learning, following the recent wave of school violence.

The group stressed the need for a more holistic approach to education that also addresses emotional well-being, values formation, and social responsibility.
