DEPED, CHED URGED TO GUARANTEE UNINTERRUPTED LEARNING AMID DISSOLUTION OF SHS PROGRAM IN SUCS, LUCS

/ 3 January 2024

SENATE Majority Leader Joel Villanueva on Tuesday urged the Department of Education and Commission on Higher Education to ensure that there will be no disruption on the education of students.

This was in connection with CHED’s order dissolving senior high school program in State and Local Universities and Colleges.

Villanueva explained that the move to discontinue the offering of Senior High School program in SUCs and LUCs is in line with the mandate of our Higher Education Institutions.

“While they were allowed to provide SHS during the transition period, we agree that it is not the role of HEIs to offer basic education, except for those with laboratory schools,” Villanueva explained.

“However, it is imperative to consider the impact of this directive on affected students,” he added.

As such, Villanueva stressed that he expects that there is sufficient coordination between DepEd and CHED to ensure that there will be no disruption on the education of our students and that there is sufficient DepEd or private sector capacity to take it on.
