CHR PUSHES PASSAGE OF SOGIE BILL

/ 25 May 2021

THE KILLING of Ebeng Mayor demonstrates why Congress should pass the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Equality bill, the Commission on Human Rights said on Monday.

The CHR sought the approval of the measure as it condemned the rape-slay of Mayor, a transgender man.

“The Commission has been relentless in pushing for the enactment of the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression (SOGIE) Equality Bill to provide legal mechanisms to hold to account perpetrators of gender-based discrimination,” its spokesperson Jacqueline de Guia said.

The Philippine National Police said the victim’s body showed signs of rape and genital mutilation.

Over the weekend, three men were arrested by the police after one of them broke down and admitted to the crime.
