CHR HELPS RUN AFTER SUSPECTS IN SEXUAL ABUSE OF MINORS

/ 12 May 2023

THE COMMISSION on Human Rights has mobilized its personnel to help search for the men behind the rape and killing of two girls in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, and the sexual abuse of minors in Quezon City.

“CHR is willing and ready to assist government in fulfilling its obligations in pursuit of a society where children are free to enjoy their youth and participate in their communities without fear of violence and abuse,” the commission said in a statement.

It cited reports that a man approached a 14-year-old girl in front of a sari-sari store in Quezon City and molested her last April 30. The victim’s father sought the assistance of the Quezon City police.

Also, on April 30 in Barangay Matandang Balara in Quezon City, a woman found that her house helper had been sexually abusing her eight-year-old girl and her seven-year-old boy. The house helper reportedly coerced the two minors to watch pornographic videos.

She reported the incident to authorities, the CHR said.

In Tagum City, reports said that the body of a nine-year-old girl was found on April 20. The autopsy report confirmed that the girl was sexually assaulted before she was killed.

In another incident in Tagum City last April 25, the body of an 18-year-old working student was found. Before she died, she was able to send a text message that she was raped.

The victim’s body will be autopsied, the commission said.

The CHR called on the government to reinforce measures against violence and sexual abuse of youth and children.

“Communities, families, workplaces and schools should be capacitated to detect signs of sexual abuse, report observed cases, and create safe spaces for these vulnerable groups,” it said.
