THE Commission on Human Rights has expressed concern over the viral TikTok video of a teacher scolding her students, saying schools must always be a safe place for children.
In a statement, CHR said that using demeaning and debasing words violates the inherent dignity of children and can have a lasting adverse effect on them.
“Teachers have the power to shape student’s consciousness and perception,” CHR said.
“Demoralizing and discriminatory language, such as what can be seen in the video, can negatively affect the students’ perception of their self-worth, which can impact many areas of their life.”
Education Secretary Sara Duterte-Carpio said that the Department of Education will not impose sanctions against the teacher.
“Nakita ko iyong explanation niya, and then sinabihan ko ang regional office natin na there will be no penalties for the teacher,” Duterte-Carpio said.
“Just to remind the teacher that if she is angry, she has to pause. Itigil muna iyong klase. And when she’s not angry anymore, saka siya magklase ulit,” the Vice President added.
