19 PH STUDENTS WIN GOLD IN INTERNATIONAL MATH OLYMPIAD

NINETEEN Filipino students won gold medals at the World International Mathematical Olympiad held on Jan. 7-8 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Leading the gold medalists are Alexandra Brianne Gochian of the St. Jude Catholic School, Harvey James Dolar of the Philippine Science High School – Main Campus and Mateo Inigo Espocia of the Genesis Christian Academy.

Completing the list are Caiser Charleton Chua So, Skyler Ioan B. Uy, Linaiah Amethyst O. Flores, Lourd Grey M. Latido, Liam Spark Peña Palarca, Lineth Mikaela B. Muldez, Agatha Maria Eden O. Nunag, Skyler Ycaruz O. Flores, Zac Andre E. De Lara, Jenelle Nyka G. Lee, Princess Abbey Cziarah A. Aquino, Arwin Peter C. Castro, Evan Justin E. Panergo, Matt Raymond Ayento, Matthew Charles C. Carpio and Rey Stephen Chua.

The Philippines, represented by 178 delegates from kinder to senior high school, also bagged 52 silver and 67 bronze medals.

Fourteen countries qualified in this year’s WIMO including Australia, Hongkong, Bulgaria, Iran, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, India, Myanmar, Cambodia, Azerbaijan, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

A panel of international experts prepared the test questions that covered standard math topics such as logical thinking, arithmetic, number theory, geometry and combinatronics.

WIMO participation is strictly by invitation to the gold medalists in the final rounds of each of these three international math competitions: Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad, Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad and the Guangdong Greater Bay Area Mathematical Olympiad.
