XAVIER U CALLS FOR ‘RESPECTFUL DISCOURSE’ AMID ELECTIONS

/ 1 April 2022

THE XAVIER University called on its community to practice respectful political discourse as the 2022 elections nears.

In a memorandum, University President Fr. Mars Tan told the XU community that discourses should reflect the identity of voters.

Tan said that while they reject all forms of disinformation, conversations should be “radically compassionate” towards others.

“The spread of unverifiable information is wrong not just in our standing as an academic institution but also in terms of morality. Thus, it is an insult to our institution, to our values, and to our profession as educators and students to permit any forms of indolence in fact-checking,”  he said.

“These respectful and informed political discourses as long as they are grounded on truth, justice, and integrity will move us to consider things bigger than the four comfortable walls that we have built for ourselves,” he added.

Hundreds of members of the XU community earlier aired their support for the presidential bid of Vice President Leni Robredo.
