STUDENTS at the University of Asia and the Pacific bagged two awards in this year’s National Model United Nations in New York.
The team is composed of Kyla Uy, Samantha Espino, Carmela Bartolome, Elle Camara, and Joshua Del Pilar. They received the “Distinguished Delegation Award” after besting other participants from other countries.
It was the second highest recognition given to delegations by UN Committe Directors.
The award is given to delegations that emerged in the top 10 percent of all participants.
Meanwhile, Del Pilar received the “Outstanding Position Paper Award” for his paper titled “Sustainable Recovery from Covid-19 and Monitoring Inclusive Sustainable Development in the Anthropocene.”
The award is only given to a maximum of 2 representatives per committee, or only 42 out of 1,500 students.
Representing the Federal Republic of Germany, UA&P sent five representatives to be in four different UN Committees: Uy in UNICEF, Espino in UNRWA, Elle Camara and Carmela Bartolome in UN Women, and Joshua Del Pilar in UNDP.
This year’s NMUN-NY saw the participation of 408 universities from 79 countries all over the world.
The National Model United Nations ensures that no participant will get their country of origin in order to maintain unbiased research and to equal the playing field.
The five-day competition consisted of eight-hour committee sessions per day where representatives were tasked to deliver speeches, write UN resolutions, and negotiate with other Member States in their respective UN Committees.
NMUN is an NGO that advances understanding of the UN and contemporary international issues. It has been formally associated with the UN Department of Global Communications since 1982 and a UN Academic Impact member since 2013.
