SILLIMAN U STUDENTS SECURE 2ND PLACE IN INTER-SHS RESEARCH CONGRESS
SENIOR High School students from Silliman University clinched second place in the 2nd Inter-SHS Research Congress held last month.
Grade 12 students Clyde Derek Garanchon and Noah Catan, representing SU’s STEAM Strand, presented their research on developing a chewing candy made from Alugbati (Basella alba) and Cocoa (Theobroma cacao).
Their study, “Conceptual Development of Alugbati and Cocoa-Based Chewing Candy for Enhancing Focus and Physical Performance in Student-Athletes and Consumers”, explored the potential of natural ingredients as a healthier alternative to synthetic energy-boosting products.
Findings suggested that the candy, rich in essential nutrients, antioxidants, and flavonols, could enhance focus and physical performance, particularly benefiting student-athletes.
The research was a collaborative effort by Garanchon, Catan, Chase D. Cuyacot, Khana Piola O. Gador, Jeff A. De La Peña, and Jan Cynth L. Palama.
Organized by the Foundation University College of Education, the competition featured student researchers from various schools in Negros Oriental, with studies evaluated based on originality, methodology, and practical impact.
Negros Oriental High School secured first place, while Demetrio L. Alviola National High School placed third.
