/ 7 August 2020

The Colegio de San Juan de Letran paid tribute to Lebanon which was rocked by deadly twin blasts in its capital in Beirut on August 4.

“This year has been hard for all of us. Let us all pause and pray for our brothers and sisters in Lebanon. #PrayForLebanon,” Letran stated on its official Facebook page.

The incident shocked the world as many thought it was a terrorist attack.

However, Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab said that 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate which had been stored for years in a portside warehouse caused the explosion.

Ammonium nitrate is a chemical commonly used for fertilizers.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, two Filipinos were killed in the incident, eight others were injured, while 12 were reported missing.

The Lebanon Health ministry revealed that at least 73 died from the blasts while 3,700 were injured.
