COLLEGE PROFESSOR: VOTERS’ EDUCATION IS IMPORTANT

/ 24 November 2021

UNIVERSITY of the Philippines Professor Justin Muyot said that voters’ education is important, especially among the youth.

“Each and every vote is important that’s why we should give enough attention to our voter registration and voters’ education efforts,” Muyot, Public Policy Center Consultant, said.

He added that the goal should be to help students and the youth be able to make up their minds regarding the many social issues that can be discussed during elections.

The Commission on Election said that there are over four million first-time voters aged 18 to 21 years old. It added that 52 percent of the total registered voters are young Filipino.

Muyot said that social media can be a tool to educate voters.

“Even if we haven’t found evidence yet of social media’s importance or relationship when it comes to voter registration, we cannot disregard the amount of time the youth spend on social media,” he said.

“Perhaps we can restrategize or rethink how we use social media so it can be effective in our voter registration and voters’ education efforts,” he added.
