NAGOYA, Japan — A promising start turned into another quarterfinal exit for Gilas Pilipinas Women as Chinese Taipei rallied from an early deficit and defeated the Philippines, 83-71, in the Asian Games on Thursday.

The Filipinas came out aggressively and raced to a seven-point lead, 9-2, but could not sustain the momentum. Chinese Taipei responded with 13 unanswered points and took a 15-9 lead after the opening period.

That reversal proved costly as the Philippines spent the rest of the game chasing its opponents.

Chinese Taipei continued to control the tempo in the second quarter, taking a 42-34 lead into the break. Gilas mounted a challenge after halftime and reduced the gap to five, 61-56, late in the third.

But the Taiwanese quickly restored their cushion, scoring four consecutive points before the quarter ended to make it 65-56 heading into the final period.

The Philippines then went cold offensively at the start of the fourth, allowing Chinese Taipei to create enough separation to protect its lead through the finish.

The loss denied Gilas a chance to reach the Asian Games semifinals for the first time since 1974, when the Philippines finished fourth in Tehran.

Gilas thus matches its fifth-place showing from the 2022 Hangzhou Games.

Bernardino led all Filipino scorers with 23 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Pontejos and Berberabe supplied 12 points each, with Pastrana adding 11.

Means, the Philippines’ naturalized player, scored four points in the losing effort.
