LAWMAKER PUSHES SAFETY REFORMS FOLLOWING STRING OF YOUTH TRAGEDIES

/ 10 July 2026

SENATOR Christopher “Bong” Go is calling for stronger safety reforms following a series of tragic incidents involving Filipino youth, particularly those that occurred within or under the supervision of academic institutions.

Speaking during the Senate Committee on Basic Education hearing on Thursday, Go expressed deep concern over the recent deaths of several young Filipinos, saying these incidents highlight the urgent need to strengthen measures that protect students and ensure safer learning environments.

The senator said the recent tragedies have alarmed parents, educators, and communities, emphasizing that the government must take decisive action to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

“Recently, our country has been shaken by a series of tragic incidents that have claimed the lives of our youth. Over the past few weeks, we have witnessed several heartbreaking tragedies and incidents involving young people. As chairperson of the Senate Committee on Youth, I am deeply concerned by these developments,” Go said.

Among the cases he cited was the drowning of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a team-building activity organized by the Ateneo de Manila University basketball team.

Go noted that initial reports pointed to possible lapses in safety protocols and risk management during the activity, adding that stronger legal safeguards and stricter administrative measures could have helped prevent the tragedy.

The senator underscored the need to review existing policies governing school activities and ensure that educational institutions implement comprehensive safety standards to better protect students participating in both academic and extracurricular programs.

He said strengthening safety regulations and accountability mechanisms is crucial to preventing future tragedies and safeguarding the welfare of Filipino youth.
