LAWMAKER SEEKS MORE SUPPORT FOR YOUNG FILIPINO ATHLETES

/ 9 July 2026

SENATOR JV Ejercito has filed a measure seeking to provide financial assistance, grassroots sports programs, and incentives to help develop young Filipino athletes and expand access to sports opportunities nationwide.

Under Senate Bill No. 2167, the government would establish programs that provide sports participation vouchers and financial aid to aspiring athletes, particularly those from low-income families and underserved communities.

The bill also seeks to support the development and improvement of local sports and recreation facilities to encourage greater participation among the youth.

In the bill’s explanatory note, Ejercito said sports play a crucial role in nation-building by promoting physical fitness while helping young Filipinos develop discipline, confidence, teamwork, leadership, perseverance, and respect.

The senator noted that many talented young athletes are unable to pursue their dreams due to the high costs of training, competition fees, equipment, transportation, and other related expenses.

He also cited the lack of adequate sports facilities and accessible community-based programs as major barriers to athletic development.

The proposed measure aims to address these challenges by ensuring that deserving young Filipinos are given equal opportunities to participate in sports and pursue athletic excellence regardless of their socioeconomic background.

Ejercito said investing in grassroots sports development would not only help produce future champions but also promote healthier communities, strengthen youth engagement, and foster a culture of sportsmanship and active living.

The senator emphasized that the bill seeks to strengthen the country’s sports development agenda by nurturing athletes from the grassroots level and providing them with the support needed to reach their full potential.
