SENATOR URGES CRACKDOWN ON DISINFORMATION IN EDUCATION
SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian is urging law enforcement agencies to take decisive action against individuals and groups spreading disinformation related to the education sector.
Gatchalian condemned the persistent spread of fake news targeting the Department of Education (DepEd), warning that such misinformation not only misleads the public but also poses risks to safety and erodes public trust.
“I am urging our law enforcement agencies to go after fake news peddlers spreading false education-related updates,” said Gatchalian. “For the past few years, the DepEd has been a regular target of fake news. It’s time we teach a lesson to those who persist in spreading false and misleading information.”
The senator emphasized that disinformation has real-world consequences, particularly when it involves policies, school schedules, or public safety announcements. “They can’t keep getting away with spreading false information that sows confusion and even endangers people’s lives,” he added.
He also appealed to the public to be more vigilant and discerning when sourcing information. “I am urging the public to be more cautious with their sources of information,” Gatchalian said, encouraging citizens to verify news through official government platforms and credible media outlets.
A known advocate for education reform, Gatchalian reiterated the importance of protecting the integrity of information in the education sector to ensure informed decision-making and uphold the welfare of both learners and educators.
