TEACHERS’ GROUP URGES COMELEC TO PRIORITIZE REFORMS TO BENEFIT EDUCATORS

/ 17 May 2025

THE Teachers’ Dignity Coalition has called on the Commission on Elections to prioritize reforms that would directly benefit public school teachers who serve as poll workers.

The group issued the statement following the 2025 midterm elections held on May 12.

TDC emphasized that the welfare of teachers must be a primary consideration in any post-election assessment.

TDC Chairperson Benjo Basas pointed out that the 2025 elections highlighted long-standing issues that continue to jeopardize the safety, infringe on the rights, and undermine the welfare and dignity of teachers involved in the electoral process.

“Our teachers carried the burden of this election with dedication and professionalism, but their service must not come at the cost of their well-being. We are calling on the COMELEC to act decisively and ensure that the reforms we’ve long been pushing for are finally implemented,” Basas said.

The group is also calling for teachers to be formally prioritized in COMELEC’s General Instructions, asserting that many qualified and willing educators were unjustly excluded from support staff roles during the polls.
