PHILIPPINE MEN’S CURLING TEAM MOVES CLOSER TO MEDAL IN 9TH ASIAN WINTER GAMES
MANILA — The Philippine men’s curling team continues to impress at the 9th Asian Winter Games in Harbin, China, staying on track for a historic podium finish.
The team, led by Filipino-Swiss curlers Marc and Enrico Pfister and Christian Haller, overwhelmed Chinese Taipei 11-3, securing their spot in the knockout qualification match against Japan on Thursday.
A victory over Japan’s Ryo Aoki, Haruki Watanabe, Ayumu Hemmi, and Rin Kyotoh will set up a semifinal clash with China.
“We’re definitely aiming for a medal. This will be historic for the country,” said lead Alan Frei after the win over Chinese Taipei on Wednesday at the Pingfang Curling Arena.
The semifinals are scheduled for Thursday evening, with South Korea awaiting the winner of the qualification match between Kazakhstan and Hong Kong. The gold-medal match will take place on Friday.
While the men’s team has advanced, the women’s team must secure a crucial win against South Korea to remain in contention for a medal.
