/ 12 July 2023

AT LEAST four lawmakers are pushing a measure mandating the continuity of educational curriculum for a period of at least six years and ensuring the stability of consequent textbooks and related materials.

Representatives Luis Raymund Villafuerte Jr., Miguel Luis Villafuerte, Tsuyoshi Anthony Horibata and Nicolas Enciso VIII filed House Bill 1794 which also aims to amend Republic Act 8047 or the Book Publishing Industry Act.

In their explanatory note, the lawmakers stressed that education system relies heavily on textbooks and reading materials.

“It is discouraging to read news articles about how textbooks from the Department of Educationused largely by the public education system are riddled with errors,” the lawmakers said.

The bill seeks to improve the competencies of the educational materials in the public education system by mandating that an education curriculum should have continuity and stability by keeping the same for a period of at least 6 years.

In order to resolve errors in textbooks and related materials, and to ensure that they are up to quality standards, an annual review shall be conducted by the Department of Education in cooperation with the National Book Development Board.
