PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – Teenager Angeline Colonia won a silver medal Saturday, setting the stage for what could be an eventful campaign by the country’s weightlifters in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games here.

The youngest among the five competitors at 16, Colonia lifted 68kg in the snatch and 80kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 148kg in the women’s 45kg event at the National Olympic Stadium.

Myanmar’s Zin May Oo bagged the gold medal with a total lift of 164kg. Bouakham Phongsakone was a distant bronze medalist with a total lift of 122kg.

“She cried after winning a silver against her veteran counterparts. She is so young and promising,” coach Edmundo Cardano said. “And we believe that this is the start of the Philippine team’s solid campaign here in weightlifting.”

Colonia, of Zamboanga City, the sister of 2016 Rio Olympian Nestor Colonia who turns 17 on May 22, said the silver medal was her gift to herself.

Cardano said he expects reigning 71kg women’s champion Vanessa Sarno to reign supreme anew on Monday, while Tokyo Olympian Erleen Ann Ando will compete Sunday in the women’s 59 kg class.

“We are expecting more medals to come tomorrow and Monday. And we still have Vanessa and Kristel Macrohon,” Cardano said.

Lovely Inan was competing at press time in the women’s 49kg class and John Febuar Ceniza in the men’s 61kg event.

Rosalinda Faustino will compete Sunday in the women’s 55 kg event along with Dave Pacaldo in the men’s 67kg category.
