HISTORIAN FURIOUS AT YAP’S STANCE ON HISTORY
DE LA Salle University Professor Xiao Chua, a historian, was angered by the statement of director Daryl Yap that historians are merely researchers.
“I don’t believe that historians should be a profession, I believe that historians are researchers. Masisipag sila na kumakalap ng mga impormasyon,” Yap said in an interview with TV host Boy Abunda.
Yap made the remark to defend his movie “Maid in Malacañang” which depicts the last 72 hours of the Marcos family in the presidential palace.
The statement did not sit well with Chua.
“Being a historian SHOULD not be a profession? I am just an ordinary person but with whatever little power I have, I will give my middle finger to you,” he said.
Chua has since apologized for the statement and said that people can visit his YouTube channel to prove that he has valid arguments regarding history.
Kabataan Party-list Representative Raoul Manuel also said that Yap’s statement is a slap at history students and historians alike.
“Sampal sa mukha ng history students and historians na sabihing hindi dapat gawing profession ang pagiging historian,” Manuel said.
