RONDINA, PONS CLINCH SILVER MEDAL IN AUSTRALIA BEACH VOLLEY TILT
Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons claimed the silver medal after a hard-fought battle in the championship of the women's elite division of the Australian Beach Volleyball Tour against Nikki Laird and Phoebe Bell,18-21, 12-21, Sunday at the Coolangatta Beach in Queensland.
The Rondina-Pons tandem yielded to their Australian foe Laird and Bell but their journey was a progressive one as they finished third in pool c, and claimed silver in the elite division.
The UST (Rondina) and FEU (Pons) stalwarts defeated Australia’s Jasmine Fleming and Britt Kendall in the semis, 21-13, 17-21, 15-10, to book their ticket in the finals.
The overall performance of Rondina and Pons is essential to their upcoming competition in the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam in May where they will try to improve their bronze medal finish in 2019.
Meanwhile, Jovelyn Gonzaga and Floremel Rodriguez won the women’s challenger Division 1; Nerissa Bautista and Genesa Eslapor were defeated by Zeimann and Donlan in the semis in the same division; but was able to bounce back in the bronze medal match, beating Australia’s Saskia de Haan and Lisa-marie Moegle.
On the men’s division, Ranran Abdilla and Jaron Requinton defeated the British tandem of Issa Batrane and Frederick Bialokoz to claim the gold medal; Philip Bagalay and James Buytrago won the bronze against Australia’s Thomas Heptinstall and Jed Walker, and Jude Garcia and Anthony Arbasto came in fifth place in the division.
