17 February 2025

NATIONAL University kicked off its UAAP Season 87 men’s volleyball campaign with a dominant straight-set victory over De La Salle University, 25-22, 25-22, 25-19, on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Despite losing key players from their previous championship runs, the four-time defending champions showed no signs of slowing down. Team captain Leo Aringo Jr. led the Bulldogs with 20 points, including 19 attacks and a block, while Alas Pilipinas standout Buds Buddin contributed 18 points and 13 excellent receptions.

Leo Ordiales made a strong debut with nine points, and Congolese middle blocker Obed Mukaba added six points from four attacks and two blocks.

La Salle, missing top hitter Vince Maglinao, struggled to keep up. Uriel Mendoza led the Green Spikers with 10 points, while Noel Michael Kampton added nine.

NU head coach Dante Alinsunurin praised his squad’s teamwork and quick in-game adjustments.

“I’m grateful for this win because we executed our game plan well. The players adjusted quickly and delivered a true team effort. I hope we maintain this momentum,” Alinsunurin said.

NU will next face Ateneo de Manila University on February 19, while La Salle takes on Adamson University on February 22.

Earlier in the day, Ateneo secured a hard-fought victory over Adamson, 25-17, 25-19, 22-25, 25-23. Kennedy Batas led Ateneo with 24 points, including 17 attacks, five blocks, and two aces.

Ateneo head coach Vince Mangulabnan acknowledged his team’s areas for improvement, especially with their upcoming match against NU.

“We still have a lot to work on, but the players executed our game plan well today,” Mangulabnan said.

Adamson, now on a seven-game losing streak dating back to last season, was led by Marc Kenneth Paulino with 13 points and Ahmed Vezie Tahiluddin with 11.

NU remains the team to beat as it seeks a historic five-peat in UAAP men’s volleyball.
