KAI SOTTO MARKS PRESEASON DEBUT WITH A WIN FOR ADELAIDE IN AN OT AGAINST CAIRNS
Kai Sotto showed potential after being in the starting lineup which led the Adelaide 36ers to outlast the Cairns Taipans in overtime, 91-87, in the NBL Blitz preseason games on Sunday at MyState Bank Arena in Tasmania.
The former NBA G League prospect posted seven points, five rebounds, one assist, and one block in 17 minutes of play, including the go-ahead drive in the final 43 seconds to break the deadlock at 72 in regulation.
With nine seconds left in the last quarter, Adelaide was at a 79-77 lead but Stephen Zimmerman scored a tip-in following a foul from Cameron Bairstow and sent the game to extra time.
In the overtime, Daniel Johnson from Adelaide sparked an 8-0 run and capped the win with a layup in the final 22 seconds.
Johnson paced the 36ers with 33 points, eight boards, and three assists, as Tad Dufelheimer got 14 points, five rebounds, and three steals in the win.
Improvements for Sotto were still called for as he committed four turnovers in just under 20 minutes of playing time.
Still, the 19-year-old Filipino Sotto added five rebounds, an assist, and a block during the overtime.
Meanwhile, Zimmerman finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds, Majok Deng had 18 points and seven boards, and Tahjere Mccall got 16 points and eight rebounds for Cairns.
Adelaide and Perth Wildcats will square off on Tuesday in continuation of preseason buildup ahead of the Dec. 3 season opener.
