FIBA ASIA CUP STILL A POSSIBILITY FOR THIRDY RAVENA BUT LIKELY TO MISS OLYMPIC QUALIFYING TOURNEY

Gilas Pilipinas will likely see former Ateneo star Thirdy Ravena gun the roster for August FIBA Asia Cup, yet to miss the June Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

The national team director Tab Baldwin shared to ABS-CBN his plans for Ravena as he’s still in Japan, just right after his stint with San-En Phoenix.

“The reason I reached out to him was to find out when he was going to be available, and he said they’re keeping him over there until I think late May,” he shared as to what they discussed for almost a month.

With the approaching campaign of the Gilas in June, the multi-decorated mentor averred that it would be unfair for the other players who are preparing since January if he’d just bring inside the court the King Eagle.

“I wouldn’t want to put Thirdy in a position where, when he goes out on the court, he’s unprepared, and doesn’t really know all of our systems. Of course, that would be unfair to the other players as well,” Baldwin said.

“We would love to have Thirdy’s talent, and you know, his attitude and his experience. But there’s a point at which it’s probably counterproductive to the whole team,” he added.

Ravena even shared the same sentiments saying that the players who are training last April “are the ones who work hard to try and get a spot.’”

Nonetheless, Ravena’s pride in representing the Philippines will always be up on the table.

“I’ve dreamt about playing for Gilas and I will always represent Gilas naman whenever I can and if the opportunity is right,” he said.

Still, Baldwin is positive for Ravena’s open schedule in the FIBA Asia Cup.

“But for these games in June, with his availability time frame, it’s not very feasible to bring him in,” he ended.
