EALA STUNS DEFENDING CHAMPION SWIATEK TO REACH HISTORIC WIMBLEDON FOURTH ROUND

5 July 2026

PINAY pride Alex Eala delivered the biggest victory of her career on Saturday, upsetting defending Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek, 7-6(9), 6-2, to secure a historic place in the fourth round of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships.

The 21-year-old continued her remarkable breakthrough season by becoming the first Filipina to advance to the Round of 16 at Wimbledon after defeating the world No. 3 on Centre Court.

Eala will next face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini with a quarterfinal berth at stake.

Overwhelmed after the victory, Eala described the moment as one she had long dreamed about.

“I don’t know how to describe it. I mean, I went to the second week of a Slam, and it’s amazing for me. Iga is a phenomenal player and a really nice person, so I’m really grateful to be able to share Centre Court with her at Wimbledon,” she said in her on-court interview.

The opening set proved to be a fierce battle. Eala surrendered a chance to close out the set at 5-3 and later watched a 5-2 lead in the tiebreak disappear before regrouping to win the extended breaker, 11-9.

Riding that momentum, the Filipina raced to a four-game lead in the second set. Swiatek briefly narrowed the gap by taking two consecutive games, but Eala stayed composed and finished the match after a tense final game featuring multiple deuces.

The victory was Eala’s second career win over Swiatek and her seventh triumph against a player ranked inside the WTA Top 10.

She is now one victory away from becoming the first Filipino singles player to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal since Felicisimo Ampon accomplished the feat at the 1953 French Championships.

Swiatek, a six-time Grand Slam champion, struggled throughout the match, committing 44 unforced errors and failing to capitalize on two set points during the opening-set tiebreak.
